One day, Nanki suggested, "Why don't we get
Nanak married? Once he will have a wife, he will earn money and become
responsible."
Everyone felt that it was a good idea to get Nanak
married. But now they would have to search for a bride.
Nanki had a girl in mind. She said,
"Moolchand's daughter Sulakhni would be a good match for Nanak."
When Nanki asked Nanak if he was ready for marriage,
he refused. But as they persisted, he finally agreed.
Mehta Kalu felt that his sweet girl would make Nanak
practical and change him into a man of the world.
The proposal of marriage between Sulakhni and Nanak
was discussed, and both the families agreed.
So in 1985, when Nanak was sixteen, he was married
to Sulakhni. It was a very simple wedding, as Nanak did not want to grand
wedding.
Nanak refused to have any old fashioned customs or
any rituals of worship in the marriage. He said that any time was auspicious
for the marriage. He also resisted against the matching of horoscopes.
Nanak simply went around the holy fire with his
bride Sulakhni and took the oath of marriage in the name of God.
The family members were very happy at Nanak's
marriage. They gave their blessings and best wishes to the couple.
Nanak's family thought that Sulakhni would make him
feel like a family man with duties.
They thoughts that now Nanak would not want to
renounce the world and go away alone as ascetic.
Nanak's companion, Mardana, came to the wedding and
wished the couple a happy married life.
He asked him, "Brother, what gift will you give
me so that I remember this day?'
Nanak gave him his rubab which he used to lend him
to play while Nanak sang.
