One day Mehta and Pandit Gopaldas saw Nanak reading
te Bhagwad Gita. They also sat down with him.
When the priest asked Nanak what he knew about the
book, Nanak recited the entire Gita without looking at the book at all.
Then he told them that the main teaching of the Gita
was to show that God is the highest knowledge, and it is God who controls life
and nature. He also told them that what are important is the soul and not the
body. The greatest truth is the human beings get rewards or punishments
according to their actions; good or bad.
Both the priest and Nanak's father were surprised at
Nanak's knowledge of the Gita.
Mehta Kalian remembered how quickly Nanak had learnt
everything from his teachers.
He knew that Nanak loved to recite devotional songs
with holy men and at times he would become sad and contemplative. He had heard
about the snake shading him with his hood
Thinking about these things, he became worried that
Nanak might leave them to become a holy man. He might want to be away from
worldly things and leave the house as ascetic do.
He decided to ask Jai Ram and Nanki to take Nanak to
Sultanpur with them. He thoughts that this change of place might bring about a
change in his son, attaching him to worldly affairs.
When he spoke to them about it, they readily agreed
to take Nanak with them, as they had already been asked by Rai Bular to do so.
