Primary
importance is given to the Guru Granth Sahib on every festival of the Sikhs.
This shows that the moral teachings are at the center of their faith. The
religious celebration of the Sikhs is called Gurupurab.
The
Sikhs believe that the Guru is there as a guide to explain, how one should live
one's life. The Guru said that the morality of being good and removing evil is
necessary.
The
Guru Granth Sahib reminds the Sikhs of the rules that Guru Nanak had laid by
leading a life based on simple living and high thinking.
After
twenty-five years of travelling, Guru Nanak settled in Kartarpur because he
wanted to spread his message among the masses.
He
went to different parts of India and the neighboring countries, and left
Dharamshalas so that his followers could meet and meditate on God.
Gurudwaras
are found all over the world and the common kitchens help travellers and poor
people.
The
weddings of the Sikhs take place in the Gurudearas. The couple takes four
rounds of the holy book.
Guru
Nanak had such a far reaching effect that his teachings are found to have
relevance even today.
This
is because what the people need today is to be good, hard-working and honest
The
modern world of today, in spite of many advancements, has forgotten the truths
of brotherhood and love, moral values are lost and man has become self-centered
and materialistic. If only we could follow the teachings of the great Gurus, it
would be the greatest tribute to them.
