Once when Guru Nanak and Mardana were going through
a forest, Mardana volunteered, "I will get something to eat."
A terrible demon-like man caught Mardana. His name
was Kodey, and he was a cannibal who ate human beings.
Kodey caught Mardana and put him in a huge vessel of
boiling oil. Mardana at once thought of Guru Nanak. When he meditated on Guru
Nanak's name, the boiling oil did not hurt him. It seemed as if the oil was
cold.
Knowing his companion and follower to be in trouble,
guru Nanak started looking for him. He reached the place where Kodey had kept
Mardana
Guru Nanak spoke to Kodey, "We are human beings
and it is wrong to eat each other." He further said, "Life is a gift
from God. We must thank Him for it and chant his name. The path you have taken
will lead you to the burning fire of hell."
Guru Nanak went on talking to Kodey who got
convinced with his ideas. Such was Nanak's power of persuasion and the aura of
his personality that Kodey folded him hands and asked forgiveness. He promised
that he would never kill humans again.
Guru Nanak had a lot of effect on the people he
spoke to. He could convince people easily and effectively, such was the
greatness of his mind and the impact of his charismatic personality. He had the
ability to touch everyone's heart and impress them.
Wherever he went, he gained many followers. He
seemed a prophet to the people because he seemed to e endowed with superhuman
powers as he could read their innermost thoughts.
Panja sahib
In 1520, Guru Nanak went to the north-West Fortier
province. Guru Nanak decided to stay there. He sat under a Peepal tree of a
valley. A Muslim saint named Vali Kandhari lived on the top of the hill.
Mardana would go to the top of the hill and get
water. But one day Vali didn't let Mardana take water from the spring and said,
"Why don't you ask your Guru for water?"
In a miserable state, Mardana came to Guru Nanak and
told him that Vali was not letting him take water.
Guru Nanak said, "Mardana, chant the name of
the Almighty." Soon the spring on the top of the hill dried up, and a
spring came out in the valley near where Guru Nanak was staying.
Seeing this, the Muslim saint got very angry and pushed
a big boulder at Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak stopped the huge boulder with the open
palm of his hand.
Even today there is a shrine with the name of Panja
Sahib which has a huge boulder with the imprint of Guru Nanak's hand.
