He preached that people should live with love and
tolerance towards each other. He spread the message of brotherhood and
equality.
He also taught that one should love the other person
as oneself. One should even love one's enemies.
He did not hate even the people who had complained
against him to Daulat Khan. Nanak himself did not think of anyone as his enemy,
and if they did something to hurt him, he responded with love.
Nanak preached that there were no Hindus, or
Muslims. Everyone was equal.
When Daulat Khan heard these teachings, he didn't
like it. He called Nanak and asked him whether he was a Hindu or a Muslim
Nanak said, "I am neither a Hindu nor a Muslim.
I am a man of God." When Daulat Khan asked him if he would pray with them
in a mosque, Nanak agreed. He went with him to a mosque.
Daulat Khan and the Qazi (the chief priest) with him
started their prayers called namaz. Everyone bent over to pray, but Nanak
remained standing.
Daulat Khan asked Nanak, "Why didn't you pray
with us?"
Nanak said, "You all are not praying properly.
You are only praying outwardly. Inwardly you are thinking of other things. What
is the use of such prayer?"
"What was I thinking or" Questioned the
Qazi.
"You were thinking of your new colt,
"Nanak answered.
The Qazi was really surprised. It was true that he
had been thinking of his colt. He wondered how Nanak had known this.
"What was I thinking?" questioned Daulat
Khan.
Nanak replied, "You were thinking about buying
horses."
Daulat Khan admitted, "You are right! I was
thinking about buying horses."
