He went out
with the other boy and never came back to the prison again.
Next day, when
Polad Khan came to take Shivaji for his execution, he saw Shivaji lying without
making any movement.
He thought
that Shivaji was already dead. But when he removed the blanket, there was
nobody there.
Polad Khan was
dumbstruck, and Aurangzeb was furious when he came to know that Shivaji had
escaped.
By that time
Shivaji, along with his son Sambhaji, was on his way towards his kingdom
Aurangzeb was
troubled by the Marathas even after that but he did not give up.
He stayed in
Aurangabad to fight with the Marathas.
Aurangzeb died
in the year 1707. His reign lasted for forty-nine years.
During his
long reign, he greatly extended the frontries of the Mughal Empire but was not
able to maintain it. The vastness of the empire made its army and bureaucracy
weak, and this made it an easy target of invasion.
Moreover,
Aurangzeb did not have trustworthy men whom he could send to take care of the
far flung regions of his empire.
He had to stay
away from his palace and court in Agra for a long time.
He was buried
according to his will in an open air grave with no tomb on top.
His simple,
open -air grave is a nearly square platform in Kuldabad near Augrangabad.
