Jahangir again
sent Shah Jahan to the Deccan. From the Deccan, he wanted Shah Jahan to go to
Kandahar.
Shah Jahan
understood that Nur Jahan understood that Nur Jahan was trying to keep him away
from Delhi.
So Shah Jahan
told his father that he would go to Kandahar only if he was given more powers.
Nur Jahan then
instigated Jahangir against Shah Jahan. All his money was taken away on the
order of his father, Emperor Jahangir.
Then Shah
Jahan fought with his father, in a region near Delhi, but was defeated.
For three
years, Shah Jahan had to run fron one place to another with his family.
When Shah
Jahan became sick, Mumtaz told him to ask his father for forgiveness.
Jahangir said
that he would have to give some land back and send his sons. Dara and
Aurangzeb, as hostages.
After one and
a half years, Shah Jahan came to know that Jahangir was sick in Kashmir.
Then on his
way to Delhi, Jahangir was caught by rebels and later he died.
Shah Jahan's
brothers Khustau and Parvez had already died, and now he had to fight with
Shahryar to become the emperor.
Mumtaz Mahal's
father, Asaf Khan, fought with Shahryar and sent a messenger to Shah Jahan,
telling him to come to Agra at once.
Asaf Khan
defeated Shahryar, and Shah Jahan was crowned as the emperor on 14th February,
1628, at Agra.
Dara and
Aurangzd were also freed by Asaf Khan, and the family was reunited.
Mumtaz had
fourteen children, and the day after the birth of her fourteenth baby. Gauhar
Ara, she died.
At that time,
she was with Shah Jahan at a battle. Before dying, she took three promises from
Shah Jahan.
Mumtaz asked
Shah Jahan to make a tomb for her that would make people remember their love.
She asked him
not to remarry and to treat his children well.
Shah Jahan
promised her to fulfill at the three wishes.
Her death
completely shattered him; his hair turned gray and he seemed to age overnight.
For two years
he did not allow any celebrations in the palace.
