The animals
in Hatim's kingdom were well looked after.
Hatim would
often go to the forest but not for hunting down the animals. He would check on
the animals to ensure that they healthy and enough to eat.
If an
animal was ill, it was taken to the palace for treatment and then it was again
released into forest.
Hatim was
so sensitive to the pain of others that he didn't allow the butchering of any
innocent animal in his kingdom.
Once, he
was passing through a dense forest with his men. Suddenly, a lion, with
ferocious look on his face, came and stood in front of Hatim.
Hatim's
troop was scared and wanted to run away for life. But Hatim, to the great
surprise of everyone, got off his horse and walked towards the lion.
The immense
benevolence of the soul gave him the ability to see the good of others even if
it was at the cost of his own life.
The humane
and courageous Hatim went straight to the lion and looked at it with Kindness.
He said to
the lion, "You must be hungry. i am right, am I not? You have got nothing
to eat, so you must be angry too."
The lion
looked at Hatim as if it understood all that Hatim was saying.
The lion
stood still as Hatim spoke on, "You can eat us all if you want because if
you are hungry you have the right to eat us."
Slowly the
lion's expression changed, and it looked at Hatim with respect. The cruelty on
its face faded away as it heard Hattie's kind words.
Hatim said,
"You are a creation of God, and you get your food by hunting."
The people
wanted to stop him from going closer to the lion, but from knew that nobody
could stop him from doing what his kind heart told him to do.
He said,
"you can eat us all but please spare our horses, as I don't like animals
being killed.'
The lion
looked at Hatim, turned around and walked away.
All the
people with Hatim were astonished to see the effect of Hatim's words on the
lion.
They went
back and told everyone about this strange encounter with the lion. Hatim was praised
by all for his brave and compassionate heart.
