Rama walked up
to the bow and silently prayed to the gods. He bent down and picked up the bow
with such ease that the whole court was left dumbstruck.
While checking
the tautness of the string. Rama pulled the bowstring so hard that the bow
broke into two, producing a sound that shook the entire earth. The surprised onlookers
remained silent for sometimes, and then the court was filled with their joyful
cries.
King Janak
warmly hugged Rama and congratulated him. He said, "My daughter Sita will
be married to you as I had promised."
King Janak
sent a messenger to king Dashratha to invite his family for the wedding of Rama
and Sita.
At once,
Dashratha with his other two sons, priests, courtiers and ministers came to
Videha. King Janak heartily welcomed king Dashratha.
In the
presence of the two kings, Vishwamitra proposed the marriages of Lakshamana
with Urmila (the other daughter of Janak) and Bharata and Shatrughna with two
daughters of Kushadhvaja, the younger brother of Janak.
King Janak and
his brother happily agreed to with proposal and so did everyone from Ayodhya.
It was decided
that the four couples would be married on the same day.
